How to Use Tags in WordPress Blog

What are tags

Jesse Petersen says:A new breed of search engine optimization (SEO) has been born: tags. Tags are essentially keywords for each page/article you create. They are purposefully sought out and indexed by search engines and other Web 2.0 sites, such as Technorati.com, who gather these terms and often sort them by date rather than popularity, though Google concentrates on relevance and popularity.

How to use WordPress tags properly

Before you use a tag on a post, think in terms of a page being created for each tag you use.  Your article will appear on each of those tag pages.  Is that what you want?  Is that tag going to be used on other relevant posts?

During the design stages of your site, make a list on a piece of paper of all the tags you want to use on your site.  These will be the most important keywords for the niche, but they should be keywords that are different to the categories you have setup for the site.  After all, WordPress will create pages for each category anyway, think of tags as “additional pages” that WordPress will create offering you a secondary way of filing your posts.

As you create posts on your site, refer to the tag list you wrote down, and use only tags on that list.  My all means add new tags over time, but make sure that tags are going to be used more than once.  Don’t create a tag that will only ever be used on a single post on your site.  Also, only use a few of the most relevant tags for each post.

You can manage your tags using the WordPress plugin

This is good info, I was wondering how and why to use tags. You definitely answered that question. I also was wondering what is a good number of categories?

I have one question. Do showing tags on side bar will rise SEO and search engine ranking position?
Few days before, i removed my tags from my home page. My page got indexed like .com/tags/post title.
So, same page indexed on google twice. one as .com/tags/(post title) and another one .com/(post title).

Tags are really important at the time of showing Related Posts as well. Based on the tags, many plugins shows the related posts on the blog which will help your blog in terms of SEO as well. Nice post Surender, keep up the good work.

I’ve read this post and comments daily since it was posted and I keep coming back to this because I’m still a little confused and need a bit of clarification.

1) Are you referring to tags or keywords used on each individual post or TOTAL tags used on one’s blog.

2) Still not clear on how to get rid of the ones that have only been used once or twice

At this point my blog shows I have used a total of 82 keywords….this is bad, yes?

Thanks,
