Creating an attractive header image is definitely on my list of things to do. I have seen a lot of really colorful ones, ones with cartoon characters of the blogger which I like a lot. But I think they are really expensive.
Using pictures on blog posts is a great way to attract immediate attention to it. It also allows your post to come up on image searches.
