Commenting plays an important role and can make or break a site. What I have noticed from my blog is that the number of comments is increasing. A post can average anything from 20-45 comments.
If it’s easy to leave comments and the user has something to say, then they will submit their comment. Some sites never reply to comments and thats not cool as I need a reply sometimes and never get one. One must do their best to reply to comments as other users also note that the webmaster is active.

George I am agree with you that many websites don’t reply but I think due to heavy pressure of work or moderation problem.

I have to agree with them all apart from holding a contest. I have had blog posts with good prizes in the past and although they have gathered 100s of comments the amount of people who have actually stuck around and become readers and contributed after the prize has gone is very small. You need some way of making people come back again and agian and that is usually the content
