Choosing the right niche for your blog can be a tricky thing. You have to pick a topic that’s popular and potentially monetizable. You should be able to write a great deal on the topic as well, so it’s necessary to pick a topic with which you feel totally comfortable. This can be a taxing job for anyone, which is why we’ve provided 10 steps that’ll help you choose the perfect niche for your blog.

1. Make A List Of Topics You Know Well

Niche bloggers need to earn subject matter expertise in their chosen area and have the ability to research information. It’s important therefore to blog only on topics with which they are comfortable. Dig through your knowledge base, your hobbies, interests and pursuits and come up with a list of 15 topics for your niche blog.

2. Test The Topics For Longevity

Trendy topics such as current politics, policies and so on will not hold user interest over time. If you plan on monetizing your blog and building a name for yourself, you need a niche that will stand the test of time. Review your list of 15 topics and shortlist 10 or 8.

3. Perform Keyword Research To Check Niche Viability

Search engines index your site based on a number of factors, but primarily, they look for targeted keywords. Locate specific keywords that pertain to your niche topic shortlist using Wordtracker’s Keyword Universe tool.

4. Check If The Niches Are Popular Or Not

You need to know if people are going to like your blog once you’re up and ready. Run the keywords you isolated through Google Analytics to find out exactly how many people are searching for related topics. You can use this method to compare different topics and gauge the popularity of each one.

5. Check Out The Competition

Search for the most popular keywords from your isolated keyword list and check out the blogs that correspond to them. By doing this, you can find out 2 things; the popularity of certain niches, and the presence and density of competition in each area.

6. Fine-Tune Your Shortlist

Set aside those niche-specific keywords for which there are fewer competitors. Fine tune your shortlist of topics based on these results; at this point you should have no more than 5 topics on hand. You know that your final shortlist of topics will work in the blogosphere. There are few competitors, but the niches are popular and there’s scope for interest.

7. Check If The Markets Are Buying Markets

After your keyword research comes market research. Find out if the topics you’ve shortlisted are part of the buying market. Many bloggers who started blogging years ago started their blogs on a whim but found that it takes hard cash to sustain their blogs over time. There’s no point in doing all this research if your niche is not part of the buying market. Who knows, doing this exercise might even open up a few new ideas of niches for you.

8. Check Out Market Segmentation

If you have a number of popular keywords for your shortlisted topics, find out how segmented the market is. One of the most important steps in marketing is to divide your audience based on their interests. You can then craft a customized, targeted message to grab more eyeballs.

For example, if you want to blog about movies, find out how many people are searching for “top movies 2011”, or “download movies 2011”. If more people are interested in watching movies and talking about them than downloading them for free, a blog targeting movie fans will probably get you more traffic.

9. Further Fine Tune Your Short List

Review all your research up to this point. At this point, we suggest that you create a worksheet with the following columns: Niche Topic, Popularity (out of 10), Competition, Keywords, Audience Segmentation, and Monetizability Scope. Bring your shortlist down to 3 or 2 from 5. Make sure you document every aspect of your process in your worksheet. You never know when you might need to start another blog or take up a different niche.

10. Follow Chosen Niche Blogs ON Social Media Sites

Make a list of the blogs that correspond to your shortlist of 3 and follow them via social media. Find out how each blog is faring. Study their posts regularly and subscribe to their feeds. Take a few days time and pick the niche that’s most successful out of your list of three. Now you’ve done everything you could to pick the best niche. You know your niche is popular, the competition is bearable, you know your audience, you know the keywords to target, you know who your biggest competitors are and therefore who to network with. In short, you have all the info you need to start the blog.

Writing is a creative art and you can only churn out good quality blog posts when the mind, eyes, and body is relaxed, because the peace of mind will allow a good flow of words and ideas. With digital technology, people now find it extremely easy to research and write simultaneously on their PC or laptop. Thanks to these devices like desktop, laptop, tablets, and smart-phones, registers and note pads are nearly eradicated from the life of writers. But those who occasionally go back to this classic medium of writing will agree that writing with pen and paper has its own plus points.

Let’s compare each of the writing mediums and see which one is the best!

Desktop

Desktop PC’s are probably the most commonly used medium of writing at the moment for bloggers. You can imagine bloggers sitting on their chairs, staring at a huge CRT monitor or LCDs and typing away. The desktop offered speed and ease of use. But as the people start to spend more and more time on their chairs in front of PC, the problems arise. For example, you can’t carry your PC everywhere; you have got to stay on your chain in a particular room in order to use it. A full time blogger, who need to sit for hours doing the research and writing, has to endure backaches and eye strain after some time, and that’s the point when writers have to move on to laptop, that they can carry around.

Laptops

Laptop, as we all know is a small, portable computer but equally powerful and even more capable. You can just sit around anywhere and you don’t have to worry about wires and input devices like mouse or keyboard. Thanks to laptop, you can now blog while sitting in a coffee shop, at a local restaurant, from your lawn, in the garden, on the couch, you name it! No more strain for your back, still, the eye strain is pretty much there. Besides, this “carrying around” and “sitting anywhere” has a constraint known as battery timing. Also, despite being much more portable than a desktop PC, a laptop is still not as light weight and easy to carry as a smart phone, which is next in our list.

Smart-phones

Though not as powerful and capable as the desktop or laptop (but with the kind of progress in the smart phone technology, you bet they will be) still the smart-phone comes across as a handy device for people who like to be able to take notes or even type rough drafts of posts anywhere. Smart phone gives them the ultimate portability, and not only writing but they can access their blogs and even publish from the smart phones. All is good? Not really, because there are times when you get just tired of typing, pressing keys and trying to focus at a screen, no matter if it is a desktop PC, laptop, or smart phone LCD. That’s the time when going back to good old combo of “pen and paper” can prove to be a blessing in disguise.

The classic means – Pen and Paper

No matter how advance the technology gets, but nothing will beat the nostalgic feeling that we get from writing on a paper with pen (just like an ebook reader can hardly replace a real paper book for people belonging to old school). At times, you might find your writer’s block going away as soon as you sit down with a pen and paper to write. There’s a certain charm and that’s the reason why you will still see some people keeping personal diaries instead of digital diaries.

Desktop vs. Laptop vs. Smartphone vs. Registers

You can’t really let go of desktop PC as it is still the best option for complex stuff, like video editing or graphics designing, when you are looking to do lots of work quickly, and multitasking, you can always count on the desktop PC to give optimal performance. However, it is damaging to your health if you sit for too long on a desktop, especially if you are writing, because it involves a lot of mind work.

Portability and performance are the laptop strong points. The only issue is probably of battery timing. Also, you cannot sit with laptop on your lap for hours, but for a quick post that doesn’t require lots of research, laptop is best.

The smart-phone can be carried around and used for jotting down ideas or rough drafts that you can use for writing on a laptop or desktop later. But of course there are some constraints, short keys being the biggest one. Typing is far from being comfortable and so is the browsing.

Pen and paper is still an ideal choice if you want to write something that is truly close to your heart, and doesn’t require references and internet surfing. But remember, you will still have to type it, because as of now, there’s no device that allows you to post your article from a piece of paper to your blog.

The biggest question facing persons entering the online finance and home mortgage writing field is how will I get paid? This is probably the most important question that writers ask and it can be a difficult one.

The way a writer gets paid will usually depend upon who is making the payment. Most employers of online writers such as Mortgage Refinance will send the payment via Paypal. Paypal is probably the best method because it is simple, and more importantly a person gets the funds quickly. A big advantage to Paypal is that the funds are available instantly in the Paypal account.

A person can use Paypal to make online transactions and transfer funds directly to bank accounts from Paypal. This means that bills can be paid through Paypal. Another advantage to Paypal is that a Paypal account is a money market account so funds in it do earn interest. Paypal also provides a record of online transactions for tax purposes. It is also possible to get a Paypal debit card so you can spend the money in the real world. This means writers can use funds made writing online for things like gasoline and groceries.

One advantage to working directly for an employer such as MortgageRefinance.com is that there are no additional charges for money. Elance will charge a writer about 5% for transferring payment and it can take a few days for Elance payments to reach a bank account. Odesk’s charges are lower but it can take several days for Odesk funds to reach your bank account.

One advantage to working directly for sites like these is that funds can be placed in escrow before the job begins. That means that the writer can see that the money is there. The escrow money will be released once the job is completed to the purchaser’s satisfaction. Dealing directly with an employer such as MortgageRefinance.com is easier. The best way for a writer to ensure payment is to have several excellent employers so that he or she is not entirely dependent on one stream of income.

At a writer’s block?
You should know that the good has passed, the bad is now, and there’s ugly somewhere lurking around the corner. When you started blogging, it was an elating experience, back then, you were able to write easily about anything, and at anytime with convenience. The ideas seemed to be flowing into your mind, there were so many that one stemmed into another, like a never ending river. Back then, the blogging was “good”, and at that stage everybody thinks that they can keep doing this for all their life.
But then the Bad arrives:

And the river of ideas trickles down to a mere drop, and suddenly, it becomes very, very exasperating to be able to think, create and write in 20 minutes like you used to, all that’s left … is you, staring at the screen, knowing that the “ugly” is ominously near.

There can’t be anything uglier for a veteran or a blogger than having no option but to write about an old, run off the mill, and excessively clichéd topic. By now you must have figured out that staring at the screen hardly helps, and that you are unable to produce anything worthwhile and the probability of replication, of your own work, or even of another writer’s work seems inevitable.

Averting the ugly:

•	To start with, remember that if you don’t blog every day for some time, it’s totally fine. Take a breather as long as you have to, don’t tire out your mind by pushing too hard, choosing quality over the quantity of posts is always ideal.

•	Try spending your time elsewhere but stay in the loop. Have a go at commenting at your peer’s blog, indulge in discussions at forums or communities, just don’t think of writing articles until you feel you’ve got your “mojo” back.

•	Try letting go of your inner critique and try freestyle writing, adopt a different style and have fun with it.

•	If these psychological ploys don’t work, try physical remedies. Go for a walk, go to a new place, and talk to somebody. It’s not just about change; physical activity will release the tension, and it will open up your mind and escalate the probability of creativity coming back.

•	If nothing else works, you can try writing exercises like jotting everything, clustering, mind mapping. Just don’t beat yourself up and avoid getting tense. Follow all this tips, rest assured, you’ll be back to the ‘good’ before you know it.
